A heat pump does the exact same thing! But, with the flip of a switch, it can also soak up heat from outside and bring it in to keep your home cozy\u2014yes, even when it\u2019s quite chilly outside!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How Heat Pumps Are So Efficient<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Generating heat, either by combusting a fuel like natural gas or by using electrical resistance to bring a heating element to a high temperature, uses a ton of energy. All they do is transfer heat, moving it from one place to another, and they can do that at very high levels of efficiency as long as temperatures rarely drop below freezing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>The Ductless Mini Split Difference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A heat pump can be used with ductwork, just like an air conditioner or furnace can. But they can also be used with a ductless system, also called a mini split because when the refrigerant lines enter your home, they split. Instead of using one central indoor unit, they have multiple air handlers, and the refrigerant travels directly to them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the air is cooled or heated by the refrigerant right where it is needed, and immediately blown out of the air handler, none of that cooling or heating energy can be lost. With ductwork, the air is no longer quite as hot or quite as cold once it reaches your vents, even when the ducts are in perfect condition. And sadly, they\u2019re often not and can be losing up to 30% of your heated or cooled air to cracks or tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, each air handler has its own thermostat.
