The summer weather arrives early in Florida… usually in spring. This is one of the reasons that we recommend having your annual air conditioning maintenance done as soon as possible so that your AC is prepared to handle sudden heat waves that might strike long before the first day of summer.
Once an air conditioning system has had its annual maintenance, it will head into the rest of the year with a significantly reduced chance of malfunctioning. But no amount of maintenance can prevent all malfunctions. Below are some repairs your air conditioner may require during the spring, and which you must have fixed as soon as possible—before they can worsen to the point that you lose cooling for your home during the hottest day of the year.
- Recharging refrigerant: The refrigerant in an AC remains constant as the system runs. But small pinhole leaks can open up along the copper refrigerant lines, allowing the chemical blend to escape. This can end up causing damage to the compressor. If you hear a hissing sound from the AC, or notice a drop in cooling power, call for repairs right away. The technicians will seal the leaks and then recharge the refrigerant to its proper amount.
- Replacing motor bearings: The first part of a motor that is likely to wear down are the bearings. A shrieking noise from the AC cabinet when it’s running is an alert that the motors have bearings that are worn down. They need to be replaced before the motor itself suffers damage.
- Unclogging the condensate drain: If your air conditioner starts to shut off suddenly, or the screen of the thermostat goes blank, it’s possible that an overflowing condensate pan is the trouble. Technicians must detach the pan and clean out the condensate drain to solve this problem.
