Understanding AC Components: The Evaporator Coil

If you are a typical homeowner, you don’t understand what each and every component within your air conditioner does. And that’s okay, you don’t need to. After all, that’s what our team is here for. However, it is wise to have an idea of how their AC system works to cool their home, to both understand when and why you might need repairs, as well as to understand the need for routine preventive maintenance.

It should be noted that professional AC repairs should only be left to the professionals, but that doesn’t mean we can’t share with you a basic knowledge of your system. One of the most important components—and the one we’ll be discussing today—is the evaporator coil.

What Is the Evaporator Coil, and What Are Common Problems?

Your air conditioning system has multiple coils. The condenser coil resides in your outdoor unit while the evaporator coil is housed in the indoor unit. This component is where the system’s refrigerant is evaporated within your air conditioning system. This is essential to the cooling process. As the refrigerant passes over your evaporator coil, heat is drawn out and the hot refrigerant continues to the outdoor unit to rid itself of the heat.

It goes without saying that if the evaporator coil is not functioning, your home will not cool down as it should. A common problem that contributes to a malfunctioning evaporator coil is your system’s air filter. If it’s excessively dirty, it could lead to condensation on the coil freezing up due to reduced airflow. As a result, your evaporator coil can develop an insulating barrier and won’t be able to adequately absorb heat as a result.
