Should You Keep Repairing Your Aging Air Conditioner?

Northwest Florida residents are no strangers to hot weather. Their air conditioners have to work much harder than that of residents in other parts of the country. That being said, you may be facing a tough decision regarding your air conditioner, if it performed poorly last cooling season.

An air conditioning system is not something you should attempt to fix on your own. Not only could you possible do more harm than good, you need to keep your safety in mind as well. Leave it up to a technician’s recommendation and your budget to decide if your aging system should have a repair done or if it makes more sense to replace the unit.

When Repairs Are Probable

If an HVAC professional informs you that a repair is possible—and that it will hold up for years to come—then you can probably go ahead and trust that is the best choice. Additionally, if your AC troubles only began last season then chances are you might only need to replace a couple of worn down parts, replace a capacitor, seal leaks, or even change the filter.

However, be sure to keep in mind the cost and the age and state of your system before investing in repairs. If repairing your system is going to come at a significant cost, then replacement may just be the better option—and the most cost effective option.

When Replacement Makes More Sense

Replacing your air conditioner might make more sense than investing in repairs if said repairs are going to cost you more than half of what an entirely new system would cost. Other indicators that replacement might be your best option include:

  • You’re making too many repairs in a year.
  • Your air conditioning system is 10-15 years old.
  • Your aging AC is not performing efficiently.
  • The system was never sized properly to begin with, causing it to struggle.
