What to Do When You See Ice on Your Air Conditioner

Does your AC look frozen? An icy AC always means there is something wrong with your unit, and the sooner you get the problem resolved, the better. If you ignore the issue, it could grow into a bigger problem–potentially even a complete system breakdown. A frozen AC also uses more energy, and you will eventually see an uptick in your energy bills.

Here we answer some key questions such as, “why does ice appear on an air conditioner?” and “do I need to call a technician for AC repair in Destin, FL to get the problem fixed?”

Ice on your Air Conditioner: What are the Causes?

If you have noticed ice on your air conditioner, it is likely because of the reasons discussed below:

A Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

A dirty or clogged air filter can reduce the amount of air that moves through the AC system, creating an imbalance in the airflow and the pressure. When the right amount of air passes over the fins, the water droplets drip into the condensation drip pan. In contrast, when the airflow gets disrupted, the water droplets remain attached to the fins for a longer period and turn into frost.

Clogged Ductwork or Damaged Fan

Poor airflow can also result from clogged ductwork or a damaged fan and blower motor. In the case of the former, you will need to get the duct cleaned and sealed properly to get rid of the problem. For the latter, you can check if the fan or blower motor is damaged by turning the unit on and checking airflow. If no air comes out of the AC, the fan may not be working.

Dirty Evaporator Coils

If your AC’s evaporator coils have become dirty, this can make it difficult for the air to pass over the coils at the required speed to ensure proper condensation. If the airflow gets obstructed, ice can form over the coils, causing them to freeze.

Low Refrigerant Levels

A refrigerant helps transfer heat from within your home and releases it outside. It helps cool the air in your home. If there is a refrigerant leak, the level of refrigerant in the unit can fall. Low refrigerant levels end up lowering the pressure in the system. This, in turn, causes temperatures to fall, and ice forms on the evaporator coil, and it freezes.

Schedule AC repair and Get Your Icy AC Fixed

Do you see ice on your AC? If so, we suggest you get the problem fixed as soon as possible. It’s best not to carry out any repairs on your own, though. This may only solve the problem on a temporary basis. Instead, we suggest you reach out to a technician specializing in AC repair in Destin and surrounding areas.
