Signs that Your Ductless AC System Needs Repair

When something goes wrong with an air conditioner, it needs prompt attention. If you allow the system to struggle for too long with an unrepaired problem, the issue can get worse quickly. This can lead to a complete breakdown, which is the last thing you want to deal with during a heatwave in the middle of a Florida summer!

The question is, how can you tell as soon as possible that something is starting to go wrong? There are some key signs you’ll notice when any kind of AC system needs repair, and some that are specific to ductless systems. Here’s what to watch for.

Noises

Clattering can indicate a loose or misaligned component. Screeching is a sign that the belt is out of position or tearing. Booming from the compressor means the system is struggling with drawing enough power to start the cooling cycle. Clicking could signal an electrical problem. But any sound at all other than the usual whoosh and hum are cause for concern and should be investigated by a technician.

Smells

A hot smell could be from an overheating motor. A fishy smell could indicate an electrical fire. A sweet, chemical smell is likely to be refrigerant leaking from the air conditioner’s coils. And a smell of mildew, or a sour vinegar smell of bacteria, means that something unpleasant is growing in a dirty condensate pan or drainage line. Don’t ignore these concerns! Get ductless AC repair in Destin, FL right away.

Uneven Cooling

If some parts of your home are perfectly cool and comfortable but others have hot spots or never quite get cool enough, it’s likely that you need AC repair. Changing the air filters in your ductless air handlers might do the trick, but if not, consult the professionals.

Insufficient Cooling

If your whole home is not getting cool enough, or if your air conditioner is running all the time trying to keep your home cool, you’ve got a performance problem. Again, changing air filters is a good idea, but it’s also possible that you have a refrigerant leak. Without enough refrigerant, the system will work harder and harder while doing a less and less effective job.

Moisture

This issue is of particular concern with ductless systems. In a traditional central air conditioner, all the evaporator coils are in one location, so there’s only one condensate pan and drain for collecting the moisture that condenses on those coils. But in a ductless system, each air handler contains evaporator coils, so they each have their own condensate pan and drain.

If one of these gets blocked and water begins to back up and overflow, major problems can ensue. If you see any dripping from an air handler, it’s urgent to get repairs right away. With this issue or any other questions or concerns about your ductless AC system, we’re always happy to get you the help you need.
